Last Thursday we did a commercial/photoshoot where I not only assisted in direction but I also played set decorator and food stylist.
I'm usually the one behind the camera so this was a new experience for me. I was out in the sun cutting up fruit and scrambling to make it look good. I even panicked a little because my chubby fingers were not ready for those small details in a short amount of time. One false move and it was strawberry or what-have-you all over the set.
Why am I telling you this? No it's not to complain. I'm telling you this because the creative industry looks fun and easy but the truth is if you work in the creative industry chances are you are wearing more than one hat. There's so many people who mistake a "creative" job for a "easy" job. Yes, at times our jobs look like all lot fun, but we work hard at what we do and it should be taken seriously because it's a lot of work. If you know a creative professional give them a high-five for being a rockstar at what they do & love. To my set decorators and food stylists, if I didn't appreciate you enough before, I certainly do now! Your skills are an art form and are essential in storytelling.
